Growing microgreens
If
you fancy doing a bit of gardening but don’t want to go all out, then why not
try growing some simple microgreens.
Microgreens
are seedlings, which have grown in seed trays for a few days, and can be used
to jazz up an otherwise dull winter salad.
The
leaves produced by microgreens are larger than sprouted seeds, but smaller than
baby salad leaves and can be harvested shortly after germination.
They
might be tiny but they’re packed with flavour. Seeds can be sown onto damp
kitchen roll, which has been cut to fit the base of a seed tray or sown
directly into compost. The trays can be placed on windowsills or in a
glasshouse/propagator to grow.
It’s
important to ensure they don’t dry out and you can use scissors to harvest as
soon as the leaves have sprouted. A variety of crops can be grown as
microgreens including coriander, cress, mustard and radish.
