Plant Of The Month - April - The Choisya

The Choisya – The Mexican orange blossom family
Why not fill your garden with the wonderful scent of a Choisya. They are tough, easy and reliable, a bit like our plant area staff!

Choose from...
 Choisya ‘Ternata’

Mexican orange blossom is the popular name for this medium sized, evergreen and aromatic shrub. Glossy, dark green foliage is complemented by an abundance of sweetly scented, white flowers in late spring. Position & use: Any well-drained soil in sun or shade. A versatile, easy-to-grow garden favourite for any site. Size 2m (6ft)

Choisya ‘Sundance’
One of the most popular plants that we sell. A small, aromatic, evergreen shrub with striking, bright yellow foliage and white, almond-scented flowers in early summer. Position & use: Any reasonable garden soil. Sun or part shade. An excellent patio plant for a pot. Size: 1m x 1m (3ft x 3ft)

Choisya ‘Aztec pearl’
Andrews personal favourite form the Mexican Orange Blossom. Compact, aromatic, evergreen shrub with finger like dark green leaves. Fragrant, pink tinged white flowers are freely produced in May and again in late summer. Position and use: Any good well drained soil, preferably in full sun. Grow the shrub in a border or a large tub. Size: 1.5m x 1.5m (5ft x 5ft)

Choisya ‘Aztec Gold’
Launched at Chelsea in 2012 and now a very valuable garden plant that we recommend on a daily basis. A robust, small evergreen shrub, bush in habit with striking, aromatic foliage. The slender leaves are golden, maturing to green in winter, and are complemented by almond-scented white flowers in spring, early summer and occasionally in autumn, attracting bees. Bred by Hiller plantsman Alan Posthill. Position and use: Any good, well drained soil, best colour in full sun but tolerates part shade. Wonderful container plant but equally good in the garden. Foliage is ideal for use in floral arrangements. Size: 1.2m x 1.2m (4ft x 4ft)

Choisya ‘White Dazzler’
The baby of the family, a new form that is dense, compact and evergreen. It has fragrant white flowers that are sensational in spring and also re-flowers in early Autumn. Position and use: Any good, well drained soil, best colour in full sun but tolerates part shade. Size: 0.9m x 0.9m (3ft x 3ft)

Planting and care for Choisya
Water thoroughly in pot before planting. Plant in soil mixed with an organic improver and suitable fertiliser. Water well in dry spells during the first year.

Make sure your garden has at least one of these fabulous plants.
