Restaurant backs Somerset farmers

Diners at our restaurant will this year (2014) be helping to support farmers within a 20-mile radius of the business many of whom were affected by the recent flooding.

Our Four Seasons Restaurant is supporting nearby farmers and offering customers details of the provenance of the food they are serving.

Sally Sparks, Manager of the restaurant, explained: “The meat we use in our Four Seasons restaurant all comes from butchers P & B Pyne in North Petherton.

“P & B Pyne is supplied by various farmers in the area and we know that all our beef comes specifically from Fordgate near Bridgwater. The farmer rears Ruby Red Devon cattle and other traditional English breeds that provide the tastiest meat.

P & B Pyne, which is a family-owned and run business that has been trading for more than 20 years, was given the coveted title of ‘South England Butcher of the Year’ in 2007 at the annual Butchers Shop of the Year (BSoY) awards ceremony in London organised by the Meat Trades Journal.

Sally added: “P & B Pyne can provide us with details of the provenance on all the meat we order from them and we can pass this information on to our visitors.

“The farm where our beef comes from has approximately 120 cattle allocated to P & B Pyne at any one time. These animals are handpicked by Pynes during varying stages of the fattening process.”

The farm uses a unique blend of cattle cake made especially for the animals it is rearing specifically for the butchers.

Sally continued: “In order to ensure animal welfare, the farm uses the abattoir in Taunton minimising the stress to any cattle that may occur during transit. This along with the skills of Pynes very experienced team and the fact that the beef is hung for at least 21 days means that our diners are offered some of the highest quality and tastiest beef in the area.”
