Bright ideas with bulbs

Autumn is already upon us and it is the perfect time to get out into the garden and plant spring flowering bulbs.

We have traditional favourites like daffodils, tulips, crocus, hyacinth and snowdrops, and lots of other ones too.

Most bulbs are best planted immediately as they’ll develop extensive root growth if planted in early autumn. Bulbs from moist woodland areas such as erythronium, galanthus and cyclamen generally need some shade so consider this when planting. Most hardy bulbs are used to dry climates and will thrive in a warm site with good drainage.

Plant them in groups with the growing points facing upwards. Plant at least three times the depth of the bulb and keep a similar distance between bulbs too.

Loose hyacinths are now in and you can plant the prepared bulbs now for colour and scent at Christmas. Why not plant up a few extra bulbs to give as growing gifts too? They make wonderful presents.

Onion sets and garlic for autumn planting will arrive in the next couple of weeks, so look out for these and other Grow Your Own goodies. You will find them near reception in the main shop. If you need any advice, please do ask as we’re happy to help.

This months FREE Garden Group talk will be all about bulbs and will be given by Duncan Witt from Taylors bulbs. For more details see our webpage here.
