Keep your pooches cool this summer
We have all been trying to keep cool in the
recent hot summer weather but it’s really important to consider your pets too.
Our Pet & Reptile Centre Manager, Liz Woodward, has some top tips on
caring for your dogs in the heat.
Unfortunately we hear far too often of dogs
being left in cars in the heat and this is my number one tip. Don’t leave them
in a vehicle, even for a short amount of time as they can suffer from
dehydration and heat exhaustion, which can lead to death.
Make sure they always have access to fresh
drinking water. They need to be able to access water all the time when it’s hot.
If it’s really hot then be sure to walk
your dogs in the cooler parts of the day. Avoid taking them out between 11am
and 3pm, when temperatures will be at their highest. It’s also important to
pick your walks carefully, try to avoid hot surfaces as these could hurt their
paw pads.
Why not treat your pooch to a rigid
children’s paddling pool? These can make a welcome cooling off spot for dogs.
Make sure they have plenty of shade in the garden too so they don’t have to sit
or play in the direct sunlight.
You could also freeze bottles of water for
them to play with and some even like to eat ice, which helps to cool them down
from within. It’s really important to remember that dogs can’t sweat, they can
only lower their body temperature by panting.
Don’t forget, if you’re coming to visit us,
we are a dog-friendly venue and your canine companions are very welcome as long
as they are on a lead.
