How to create your dream greenhouse

Here are our top 10 tips on how to create your dream glasshouse and where to go if you need more free advice.

  1. If you’re wanting to raise seeds, propagate plants and grow crops such as tomatoes, cucumbers and melons, then choose a style with glass right down to the ground, as the more light the better.
  2. It should have good ventilation too on all sides and even roof vents.
  3. If you want somewhere for tender plants to spend the winter months away from the cold winds and frosts, or to grow a little bit of everything, then go for a brick based option.
  4. If you’re not planning on staying in your current home long-term, then installing a very expensive greenhouse doesn’t make sense as the next owner may not be a gardener.
  5. To take advantage of the sun, particularly in the winter, then position it east/west.
  6. Site your greenhouse on a level spot and avoid the bottom of a slope as this may be a frost pocket.
  7. Place it away from buildings and trees as these may cast a shadow and also the debris from trees can land on your greenhouse and block out light and gutters.
  8. Think about power and water. The easier the access to these the better. No one wants to carry heavy cans of water too far.
  9. Remember really cheap greenhouses aren’t always the best as they tend to be unstable and may collapse in bad weather. They also don’t have toughened glass, which is great for protection from any rogue footballs.
  10. You do need to ask permission if you’re considering putting up a greenhouse on an allotment.
