Time for a little bit of reflection...
Water is one of the most fascinating and
relaxing elements that you can incorporate into your garden.
Whether it is a still pond that reflects
everything around it or a gentle fountain, it holds a fascination for both the
young and old.
What’s more water gardening is a pleasure
that can be enjoyed and afforded by all.
The introduction of new materials, such as
low-density polethene (LDPE) and fibreglass for pool construction, have revolutionised
water gardening.
Pumps and filters have also become much
simpler and smaller during the past few years. This means that tiny water
features can be created, even on the smallest of patios.
Before selecting a water feature you do
need to consider who uses the garden. Do small children play in the garden or
could they wander into your garden off the street?
Pebble pools are much more child-friendly
than many other water features but metal grids can also be used to cover ponds
if necessary.
You also need to consider the maintenance
of your water feature. A fountain will need very little time and attention but
a water feature that includes fish and/or plants will require more maintenance.
With features that include moving water
you will need access to an electrical supply, however solar-powered options are
now also available.
It is important to choose the right site
for your water feature. For a pond you need a sheltered spot that has at least
six hours of sunlight a day and is away from deciduous trees.
Leaves that drop into the pool in the
autumn can cause problems as they decompose in the water.
Other water features can be placed
anywhere as long as they are not a tripping hazard and you have considered the
need for an electricity supply.
