Plant Of The Month - July - Salvia

Perennial Salvias form a large group of garden plants and are one of the mainstays of the midsummer garden border.

Their spikes of small, densely packed flowers provide colour from early to late summer, and are borne atop aromatic foliage.  Colours vary from blues and violets to reds, whites and pinks, and also bi-colours, such as Salvia ‘Hot Lips’ -  it’s charming red and white flowers held on slender stems.

Some Salvias need a little protection from the harshest weather but grown in a sunny well drained position in the garden, they are trouble free. Some are also very successful grown in pots. They are very attractive to bees and butterflies.
