Somerset crafters can create unicorns for charity

We want all you crafty folk out there to put your sewing skills to the test and create a felt unicorn using a kit our Pet and Craft Centre’s have created in aid of charity.

The two centres have teamed up to produce a ‘Candyfloss the Unicorn’ sewing kit in aid of Conquest Centre, which provides horse-based activities for children and adults with physical and learning disabilities.

The kit contains everything you will need to make a felt unicorn. There are a variety of colours available and each kit comes with helpful instructions. The kits will cost £3.99 and £2 from each sale will go to the charity.

People of all ages can give these a go. We’d love it if you tried the different colours and created your own blessing of unicorns at home. You can also tweet us pictures of the finished unicorns @MonktonElm or post them on our Facebook page at www.facebook.com/monktonelm.

We chose to raise money for Conquest Centre because we wanted to support a local animal charity and many of us know someone who has benefitted from animal therapy related activities.

Conquest Centre, which is based at Norton Fitzwarren, provides horse-based activities for people with physical and learning disabilities, including emotional and behavioural challenges, and through this benefits their health and well-being. It delivers these activities in an inclusive equine environment which welcomes the whole community.

Its work focuses on each person’s ability rather than disability and aims to allow each individual to achieve their personal goals.

Conquest began its journey in 1965. Today it caters for 180 disabled children and adults each week, as well as families/carers, students, volunteers, public riders and local clubs and associations.

As well as individuals who access Conquest directly, its services are used by Community Payback, local authority care homes, special schools/SEN departments, Somerset County Council’s Short Breaks programme and local disability support groups.

Teresa Wort, Corporate and Community Fundraiser at Conquest Centre, said: “We are extremely grateful to have been chosen to benefit from the beautiful Candyfloss Unicorn kit. They are absolutely gorgeous and we know they will be extremely popular, a lovely gift to receive or to give.”
