Keep an eye on your veggies and those pests

With harvesting season now in full swing, you do need to keep an eye on all your crops in your beds, plots, tubs, containers and growbags.

Leave them unattended for too long and they will go over and become flavour-less and tough.

Now is a good time to plan ahead for next year too and sow endive, radish and spring cabbage or winter varieties of spinach and turnips. Then you can feel very smug that while you swing in your garden hammock there are veggies growing away for 2017!

Pests and diseases love warm weather, so check plants regularly for any signs of issues. Mildews and red spider mite are always worse in dry conditions.

Earwigs eat the leaves and flower buds on plants like clematis, dahlias and chrysanthemums and slugs and snails can still wreak havoc at this time of year.

If you’ve got any plant problems one of our friendly staff can help you choose suitable products to rid you of the pests and diseases. A wide range of pests can be controlled by spraying with Ultimate Bug Killer.

Vine weevil beetles tend to lay eggs in late summer and early autumn so it pays to protect vulnerable plants in pots – such as begonias, fuchsias, cyclamen and sedums – with Vine Weevil Killer.

Check out our range of biological controls for vine weevil and other common pests in-store too.
