Four fab things to do in your garden this month
There are lots of adventures to be had and here are a few of our suggestions:
Get yourself a wood-fired oven
Extend the season outdoors with some al fresco cooking on an open fire. Go for a wood-fired oven. They not only cook well but also provide warmth so you can stay outside for longer and enjoy a meal, drinks or even card games well into the evening, even if there is a chill in the air. Make sure you also invest in some solar or electric-powered outdoor lighting to ensure your evening is well illuminated too.
Go for autumn colour
Try the Amelanchier tree. This is a small tree, which is ideal for an urban garden. It has white flowers in spring and beautiful red and orange leaves in autumn.
Plant winter GYO crops
Rhubarb crowns are available now to be planted, as well as asparagus, Japanese onions and garlic.
Quick-growing crops can also be planted to supply salads or stir-fries throughout the autumn. Go for pak choi, spinach and radishes.
Plant unusual fruit trees
Medlar provide beautiful autumn colour. The fruits were enjoyed by the Romans and the Victorians but have since fallen from grace. This tree is perfect for growing in a town garden as they can be kept small.
