Time for some garden maintenance

During the winter months, it's tempting to stay in our warm homes rather than spending time out in the garden. But a little maintenance now will ensure your outdoor space looks great next year.

Plants that are not killed off by the frosts will become dormant for the winter. Tidy up any foliage that remains by cutting back any dead stems. Dig-up dead annuals and vegetables to prevent diseases from spreading throughout the garden.

Mulch is very much the gardeners’ friend at this time of year. Spread a thick layer over remaining plants and the soil. This will protect them from stressful extremes of weather. Collect any fallen leaves and use special bags to create your own leaf mulch too. This is an invaluable nutrient-rich resource.

If you are planning a new lawn, now is a good time to turn your attention to creating it. Dig out the proposed area making sure to leave some soil on the surface. The soil will be broken down by the frosts creating the perfect base for your new lawn. You will then be able to sow the area in the spring/summer.

With your existing lawn, refrain from cutting it or feeding it during the winter even if it does show signs of growth. Grass that is too short can struggle in the winter to survive and grass that is too long can become brittle and break off in frosty conditions.

It is essential though, to keep weeds and moss under control throughout the winter. Regularly rake fallen leaves and other debris so your grass still has access to sunlight.
