Things to do in the garden this month

If you’re looking for some jobs to be getting on with this month then here are a few that might be good to add to your ‘to do’ list in May:

• Plant up hanging baskets and patio tubs with summer-flowering bedding.

• If you’ve recently planted trees and shrubs they need regular watering for their first two growing seasons to help them get established.

• Prune overgrown camellias.

• Net cherries for culinary use to protect them from birds.

• Earth up potatoes as the foliage reaches 23cm to prevent green tubers.

• Continue harvesting rhubarb.
