Five spring lawn care tips

Handy hints from our horticultural experts to help you get ahead for the coming season:

  1. Once your grass starts to grow you will need to start mowing your lawn.  Do not leave it too late. If like most of us your grass has continued to grow all through the winter then you will need to wait until the ground is drier to be able to start cutting it.
  2. Set the mower height quite high, taking no more than one quarter of the length of the grass off at a time to avoid causing stress to the lawn.
  3. As the grass begins to grow faster increase the mowing frequency and gradually reduce the height of the cut as required.
  4. Apply a spring lawn food to give the lawn the essential nutrients it needs at this time of year.  A slow release fertiliser is beneficial.
  5. Aerate compacted areas of the lawn with a hand fork or with a spiking machine, which are available for hire from tool hire centres. This will improve drainage and allow more air into the root system.
