How to have stunning hanging baskets & patio pots

At this time of the year there are many things to consider doing in the garden. Perhaps one of the most important jobs is sorting out the tubs and hanging baskets for the summer.

Here are a few handy hint to help you plant up your own containers this month...

  • Pick a good compost with a slow releasing fertiliser.
If the container you are using does not have a reservoir for water, place a small selection of stones inside at the bottom.
Use water-retaining granules in the compost.
If you do not select compost with a slow-releasing fertiliser include plugs for this purpose.
Never over-fill your container with compost, as once you start planting this extra space will be filled.
Make a dip in the middle of your compost to prevent water run-off.
  • Plant a central plant such as a geranium, fuchsia or tuberous begonia in the middle of the container.  Place trailing plants around the outside and fill in spaces with other bedding and patio plants.
  • If you are planting a half-basket remember to keep all trailing plants at the front.
  • With wire baskets it is possible to push plants through the sides so they grow all around the basin.
  • Once planted keep containers and baskets indoors or in a glasshouse or shed overnight and outside during the daytime until the risk of frost has passed.
  • When plants are established make sure they are watered and fed regularly as hot or windy weather can cause containers to dry out very quickly.
  • Feeding is very important to maintain a long and prolific flowering season.
